July Artist of the Month is...
There’s no denying those first two Maiden albums I owned are beyond classic. If you were teaching a course on the History of Heavy Metal there is no way in the fiery pits of hell to not mention those two albums. If you think for a second those albums weren’t important (if you do you’re an idiot just so someone finally tells you) then you can toss all your Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and any other 80s thrash straight in old File 13. Yes there were other influences on these bands to be sure but it’d be a far different world today if Iron Maiden had never formed. I guarantee Cannibal Corpse will never be a household name but everyone knows Iron Maiden from your grandma to the grandkids. And since they’ve been around through four decades now, you’re good ol’ granny just may have seen ‘em. Ummm… has anyone ever told you that you look a little like Bruce Dickinson? HAHAHAHAHA!
It was a Saturday, I remember that, and one that I knew I was going to have the house to myself because my parents were going out somewhere and my sisters were off somewhere doing their own thing. I was going to have the house and more importantly the TV and VCR to myself. Yes, I was like 12 or 13 but no, I was not excited for an all out wank session, ya damn perverts! No, I was excited because I was able to rent Live After Death from the video store! Feel Free to shout Nerd! but ummm… FUCK YOU! It’s Maiden! So thenSaturday came and I couldn’t wait for everyone to leave so I could get down with Maiden! Finally everyone did and it was just me and Live After Death. As I’ve stated previously I grew up in the middle of nowhere and actually going to a concert seemed like a distant dream so this was about as close as I was going to get for awhile and I knew it. It was summer time so I waited patiently for it to be completely dark then grabbed a soda from the fridge and slid Live After Death into the VCR. Oh, but I was missing something… my headphones! Yes, even though I could blast it as loud as it would go I wanted it blasting in my head and I’m a huge fan of my headphones, I’m wearing some right now.
You can see the set list and see the full concert so I won’t go through every track because it’s Maiden and you should know most of them by heart if you’re a “true” metalhead. However, I would like to highlight a couple that are just amazing. First, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner was never one of my favorite tracks but with Dickinson’s intro and the performance, this version is just spectacular! If you watch nothing else on Live After Death do skip ahead to that at the 28:48 mark. I’d also like to mention my favorite Iron Maiden track. You’re probably thinking it’s something fast & furious like signature Steve Harris galloping bass line of Run To The Hills or the ever popular Number of the Beast or The Trooper. All great songs but no, my favorite Maiden song ever is Hallowed Be Thy Name (skip to the 54:55 mark). It’s just fantastic Dickinson’s voice conveys so much feeling it’s as though it’s the music playing on your own march to the gallows. Just fucking amazing and leaves me completely SKULLFUCKED! (All mother fucking pun intended!)
