Released: September 16th 2016
Label: Heavy Earth Records
From: Mares of Diomedes - Ireland
Dreich - Denmark
Style: Mares of Diomedes - Sludge/doom
Dreich - blackened sludge/doom
Dreich mix their sludge and doom with some black metal guitar tones and vocals giving their three tracks of the split a grim and evil vibe. The skull crushing heaviness will nearly rattle the teeth from your skull while the varying growls and blackened shrieks will have you checking behind you for what these tracks have summoned up from hell. This portion of the split should have you begging for more from Dreich.
Mares of Diomedes two tracks lean more heavily to the sludge side of things reminding me a doomier version of one of my favorites, Black Tusk. This pair of Irish brothers, Shea and Jordan Campbell, unleash sonic destruction on your poor eardrums while never forgetting the importance of melody as these two tracks speed up and slow down with reckless abandon. These two tracks do exactly what a split like this should do by making you want to seek out more from the band, both bands actually. The two slightly different styles contrast nicely and after you visit the hospital to tend to your fractured skull you can spin it again!
