Buckle up for brutality! Probably second to black metal is all the awesome death metal we get sent along with what I find myself which is plenty. It took me many years to "get into" death metal and now I can't imagine why. Anyway I picked out some of the best of the death metal I've been listening to lately so you better fucking enjoy this!

Venomous Concept are a death/grind fans wet dream. Here you have a supergroup made up of Brutal Truth and Napalm Death which is one damn fine venomous concept, obviously the pun is intended! How could this not be completely fucking awesome? Well don't worry it's completely fucking awesome and everything you would think it might sound like. A whole lot of death, a whole lot of grind and a whole lot of dark humor to keep it all fun as hell. There is honestly nothing unexpected here, this is just 21 death/grind tracks from some legendary musicians who sound like they had ten tons of fun recording it. Take a look through the song titles and you can see how much fun they were having from titles like Fuck in Czech Republic, Leper Dog, Johnny Cheeseburger or Pretty On The Inside and as a horror fan my personal Favorite Track: Head On A Stick. If you don't know that was a lesson that awesome baddie Mick gave in Wolf Creek then you need to brush up on your horror asshole! Seriously it's one of my favorites along with its sequel. The only thing missing on this album was a soundbite of Mick (John Jarratt) on Head On A Stick. Nothing but pure death/grind fun and a must have for your collection!

I happened to see this one not long ago and I finally picked it up to check it out. Ghastly are a two man outfit, Gassy Sam on vocals (something tells me I don't want to be locked in an unventilated room with him) and Ian who handles all the instruments. If you like stoner friendly Sabbath style death/doom than you should definitely pick yourself up a copy. When you need a little brutality but you've perhaps taken a couple of bong rips this one is fucking perfect! The band claims on their Facebook page that their influences are "Metal, progressive rock, movies, sick humor and heavy drinking." Sounds like a wonderful batch of influences for the exact style of music they're putting out. Carrion of Time is stripped down and simple death/doom and it's mother fucking entertaining! I love doom anyway so it kind of strikes right in my groove zone between traditional Sabbath style doom with some Death style death influence. There's even a black metal quality to Gassy Sam's vocals so plenty for us metalheads to love. If you're a fan of hyper-technical death metal this one ain't for you but for a doom lover like me it's just a whole lot of fun. Favorite Track: Track 5 - Reaches of Hell.

I'll admit from the start this four song Ep was my introduction to Divinity and I have not yet found the time to go back and listen to Part 1 of what is an intended trilogy of EPs from these Canadian metalmeisters. I had considered waiting until the trilogy was complete and doing a full break down on essentially one full album but then I listened to this and it's pretty damn excellent so in case Divinity are new to you as they were to me I wanted to share it. You also get a guest spot from Bjorn "Speed" Strid (Soilwork) on the track DMT. While I don't love everything Soilwork has done over the years I've still been a fan for a long time so that pushed this over the edge for me. I'd almost say Divinity sound like a little thrashier version of Soilwork mixed with some Intronaut style djent as well. One thing is for certain after hearing Part 2 I will definitely check out Part 1 while I (im)patiently wait for the conclusion of the trilogy. If it's as good as this then count me the fuck in! Favorite Track: Track 2 - Psywar.

In the mood for some old school Florida style death metal mixed with some old school Bay Area Thrash? Henrietta is just what you're looking for then. This album sounds like it should have come out around 1988 or '89. I don't mean that in a derogatory way since that's when I was still really cutting my own metal teeth so Henrietta has a bit of a retro sound that's right up my alley. I can hear a little bit of Rust in Peace era Megadeth mixed with some Cause of Death era Obituary. If you're not an old fucker like me there is still plenty for you to love on this one outside of my nostalgia factor. This one is a little more thrash than death at times and also vice versa bouncing between the two styles pretty seamlessly. The lyrics are pretty brutal at times as on my Favorite Track: Track 5 - Midnight Neutering which is almost a little death infused Anthrax type of a track. All in all this is a damn fine release that had me thinking back to the late 80s when I was still in high school tape trading with my friends.

Brutal death metal with some groove sound like something you'd be into? Check out Bloodphemy. This four song Ep brings Bloodphemy back after a ten year hiatus and you should be glad their back. Imagine Deicide with more than just a little groove in spots and that's Bloodphemy in a nutshell. This is brutal enough to pound your metal lovin' ass into the pavement but then Bloodphemy pick you up and dance with your dead corpse. They're sweet like that. All kidding aside this is some damn good death metal that has me looking forward to their eventual full length. Favorite Track: Track 2 - Catch 23.

Braineater is a band I shared with you last May when I found their Ep Reclusive fooling around on Bandcamp one day. At the time I said, "Reclusive is nasty and brutal at times followed with some black metal type screams followed with some hardcore chorus chants ala Hatebreed and it all worked for me. This is a great album to work some aggression out to which is exactly what the band state was the intention." Due to that little review we were sent Braineater's follow-up Ep to Reclusive. This time around the band starts us off with a soundbite from Inglorious Basterds in an obvious attempt to butter up a huge Tarantino fan. As far as bribery goes I'd prefer something green and for the record I don't care if it's paper or something stinky (just sayin). Braineater also attempted to momentarily fool me into thinking they had calmed down a bit or perhaps traded beer and weed for valium but then Hooked on LCD threw that notion out the window. Braineater once again mix death/grind/punk with loads of brutality for an end result which is controlled chaos. You may not hear them on the radio anytime soon but Fuck Radio! Favorite Track: Track 4 - Opinionated.
