Welcome metalheads! It’s time to sit back and relax as we start to wind down another Hump Day Metal Day here in the Scribbler Mansion with a nice cold one, a big fat one and some doooom! For the record the “nice cold one” is the corpse of my ex and the “big fat one” is your mom!

​You know this shit is my favorite so grab your favorite smoking utensil and enjoy some chill tunes! I played around on Bandcamp for a couple hours Sunday afternoon so half of these I plucked out from the detritus to share with you without any help. Feel free to share some of your hidden favorites down in the comments, I don’t get time to play around searching very often so I try to make the most of it. I’ll kick things off with a quick new awesome find from my niece’s hometown of Austin, TX. I wish this was her kind of music, sorry she’s into pop and country :(

​Witchcryer – The Preying Kind (Demo MMXVI)

Style: bluesy stoner/doom metal

​This little three song demo from Witchcryer is the reason I love when I have time to search around and discover new music. It’s doubtful I would have heard this one if I hadn’t. Witchcryer with excellent vocals from Suzy Bravo remind me of a discovery I made last year in Oceans of Slumber (their new album Winter will be out Friday!). Where Cammie Gilbert sounds like Nina Simone, Suzy Bravo sounds more like a cross between Janis Joplin and Witch Mountain’s former frontwoman Uta Plotkin. Speaking of Witch Mountain, who hopefully you’re familiar with, Witchcryer reminded me of a bluesier (New word! Score!) version of that band. Usually the production on a “demo” is total shit but The Preying Kind is a fairly well polished recording that only leaves me wanting to hear more from this band. I have no say in whether a label will pick them up or not but if I owned a label I wouldn’t be able to sign this band fast enough. This is a fantastic little demo that should have some mass appeal unless you have no taste in music. I assume if you’re visiting our little site that your taste in music is awesome so listen to this demo then tell your friends to do so as well!

​Plateau Sigma – Rituals

Style: progressive traditional doom

Concept album time! In the age of the “hit” single its only metal that keeps the art of making an album alive and well. Fleshgod Apocalypse recently dropped King which is a concept album showing the dark side of humanity through the eyes of a King’s court and here on Rituals Plateau Sigma tell related themes of love, war and death through odes to Greek-Roman Gods. A statement from the band tells it better than I can, “Rituals - an idea by Plateau Sigma  - A recall and interpretation in ‘doom-metal/dark-wave’ key of the rituality, the solemnity, the sensuality of the propitiatory rites of War, Death and Love in the ancient Greek-Roman cultures. A liaison with and towards the past we belong to and are a part of, still, and that we should preserve with pride. While each song is an Ode to a divinity of the Roman Pantheon, the album in its whole is dedicated to God Bacchus and in our modest opinion, we believe that Doom Metal is the best music genre to represent Dionysian atmospheres.” Personally I couldn’t agree more with that final statement. The nice thing about Rituals is that even though it is a concept album it doesn’t beat you over the head with it as good concept albums tend to do well. You can listen to Rituals in its entirety pondering on the themes running through it or you can enjoy each song individually with little thought to the overarching concept behind it. There are songs of traditional Sabbath style doom like on Palladion and the funeral doom of The Bridge and The Abyss. In other words if you’re a lover of all styles of doom like I am there is a lot to love on Rituals. Favorite Track: The Bridge and The Abyss

​Dead Elephant – Heavy, Huge and Rotten

Style: death infused sludge/doom

​This is yet another one I stumbled over the other day on my own and the album title tells you everything you need to really know. Dead Elephant is Heavy, Huge and Rotten! This sludge is a mix of crust, death and doom that sounds as heavy as their moniker, Dead Elephant. You’ve probably heard the term “elephants marching riff” well Dead Elephant offer plenty of that but it’s more like an infinite rain of ten ton dead elephants falling around you. The album starts off pummeling you and doesn’t let up until nothing of you is left but dust and a blood stain on the pavement. You can’t call yourself Dead Elephant and play some weak ass metalcore and Dead Elephant bring the heavy from the opening riff of Boleta to the closing note of Kiss of Mora. Dead Elephant are similar in style to Fister with their fuzzy brand of sludgey doom which simply means you should fucking love it. I did. Check it out since there is absolutely no excuse not to since the band has made it available for free though please donate so they can make more awesome music! Favorite Track: the 14 minute opus that is Heavy, Huge and Rotten!

​Haunting Eden – The Ruins

From: Atlanta, GA
Style: gothic stoner/doom

I don’t get to share something like this very often. We share a lot of brutal, kick you in the nuts with a steel toe boot metal but we don’t often get to share something that is just beautiful. I don’t mean the female vocalist of Haunting Eden either since I have not seen what she looks like. I mean the music and her voice, beautiful is the only word that came to mind as soon as I hit play on this one the other day. This was another find from my playing around in Bandcamp a few days ago and another that I probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Vocalist JoLee has a wonderful voice that complements the music of Haunting Eden extremely well. Haunting Eden are kind of a bluesy hard rock band that you could slap the stoner rock or doom label on very easily as those elements are blended in as well. Imagine early Heart and you’ll have a decent idea of what to expect on this one. The bottom line is that it was a pleasure to listen to all the way through which I’ve done a few times now. Favorite Tracks: Here’s To and A Thousand Miles

​Victorian Whore Dogs – Afternoonified

Style: hobo sludge/sexy trampcore

Ya gotta love a band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously while taking their music very seriously. Victorian Whore Dogs self describe as “hobo sludge/sexy trampcore” now if that’s taking yourself seriously then slap my ass and call me Susan (please don’t by the way). Aside from that and their moniker itself just look at some of their song titles for more hilarity like Captain Kirk Was My Favourite Stormtrooper, (I Can’t Believe It’s) Nutbutter or Murder Boner. If you didn’t at least snicker then get the fuck out of here you humorless cunt! Now that may have you thinking that VWD are some sort of S.O.D. or Psychostick (a couple of my favorites) but this is some death infused stoner sludge with plenty of downtuned groove to make any sludge fan enormously happy. I know because I’m enormously happy! It isn’t often you see a band this heavy having this much fun and keeping things lighthearted while screaming in your face. Trust me, it’s awesome and you should want it immediately. I’ve been enjoying it for a few weeks, unfortunately you’ll have to wait until the 31st, sorry. Favorite Tracks: Murder Boner and Snatch Files

Spirit Adrift – Behind – Beyond

Label: Prosthetic Records
From: Ireland
Style: psychedelic epic doom

Now for a mystery band that I couldn’t wait to share with you the second I heard it. Spirit Adrift consists of unknown members, only two if that’s correct, just bass, drums and vocals. I couldn’t help thinking of Om due to that combo but then listening to it that thought was confirmed even further. One of my favorite Om albums is Conference of the Birds which is a two epic song album that just never gets old to me and Behind – Beyond is in that territory. Epic doom of the Om variety only with vocals sounding more similar to Mike Scheidt from YOB than Om’s Al Cisneros. Sound good? Well it is! Spirit Adrift are said to already be working on their debut full length and if these two songs are any indication of what’s to come then count me the fuck in now! For the record it is rumored that that full length may just be in my grubby little hands before the end of the year. Up to now Ape Cave’s Pillars of Evolution has been my #1 doom album of the year but Behind – Beyond is now giving that top spot a run for the money. Honestly, I don’t think I could love this one much more than I do and these mystery players are from Ireland appealing to my green shaded shamrock side. I couldn’t recommend this one any higher. It’s awesome so get your copy now, you will not regret it. Favorite Track: Both of them Duh!

So that’s all the best new doom and sludge in my life in recent days or at least most of it. I found a few more that I’ll be sharing before long but we bombard you enough with great new metal so I saved a few for later (possible leaner times). That’s all I have for now but I’ll have more soon as I wade through a backlog of about 150-ish albums still to be listened to and possibly shared.
