Welcome Scribbler horror & TV fans! I finally had a chance to watch the first episode of the new season of American Horror Story - Freakshow last night so I thought I'd share my initial thoughts. So here we go...
The new season of American Horror Story began Wednesday night (Oct 8th) and this is one show I've been looking forward to since my lovely lady friend got me into the show last season with AHS: Coven. When it was revealed that this season was going to be called Freakshow it was a title that honestly didn't impress me much. Horror coupled with freakshows has been done and done and done and done again but there's always the chance of something new, different and/or cool that could come out of it. With Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates all returning this season we at least know this season won't suffer from wretched acting and so far it seems to be written very well though I still have yet to go back and watch the first two seasons. Well the second anyway, the first still doesn't interest me at all. So how did the Freakshow opening do?
So before I begin I want to preface this by saying I did not hate this first episode for the new season of AHS but I wasn't overly impressed either. I stated above horror in regards to freaks/freakshows has been done a million times (see also HBO's Carnivale 2003-05) but what has been done even more is a psychotic killer clown. While the clown in Freakshow certainly looks wicked and provides random bloodshed... Really AHS!?! Another Fucking Psycho Clown!? Fuck! First, this has been beyond done to death and second, no one is better than Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding (House of 1000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects), period! But again that aside the clown here does at least look wicked so hopefully it ends up being there as more than just the gore supplier. He does appear to be quite the killing machine so it isn't all bad. Maybe this only bothers Old Man Feind but damn, could we do something different at all?! Moving on...
I was glad to see that the trio of killer ladies from Coven (Lange, Bassett & Bates) returned but there were others returning I wasn't so glad to see returning. I'm mainly referring to Sarah Paulson (my apologies) who has been in every season of AHS so far. I don't know what it is but I just personally don't care for her not that she's a terrible actress or anything just something about her I don't like and holy bloody shit there's two of her this time! So she already had a strike against her just from my personal preference but then the writers go and do something I truly fucking hate with a whole "Dear Diary" wad of bullshit. Maybe I'm the only one (I know I'm not) that is tired to death of this sort of thing but there it is just to annoy the living shit out of me. What else AHS? Fucking found footage? NO! Please... that's just a joke... don't... really I'm begging! So sorry to anyone who enjoys this but aside from the two-headed effect being done excellently there is nothing I like about this character. And ooh SPOILER ALERT if you didn't watch yet... one head is good and the other is evil. Fucking done to death cliche No. 2 - Double Check!
I had a few other smaller issues with Freakshow but the last one I'll touch on is the completely out of place musical number toward the end of the episode. WTF was that? The song wasn't so much bad as just 100% out of place. Freakshow takes place in the early 50s, 1952 to be precise, yet this tiny little traveling sideshow attraction manages a musical number that would make Madonna jealous? Damn! It really couldn't have been more out of place in the time period of the show but also in the show itself. It was like a Broadway number slapped in the middle of a drama... oh wait, IT WAS! Thank goodness for autotune because as much as I like Jessica Lange there is no way in hell she sounds that good. I can only hope this was a one time occurrence though I have my doubts.
Overall I thought the first episode was a little dull and full of cliches so hopefully it will get better going forward this season. I don't like seeing that lovely Angela Bassett is being given three breasts but maybe I'm not the typical guy. She's a beautiful woman but the third breast is just wrong man! My least favorite character from last season is returning as well, the ultra bitch (her character not her personally) Emma Roberts though from the preview she doesn't look to be such a C U Next Tuesday this season. But there's hope with one of my other favorites returning for Freakshow in Jamie Brewer so hopefully that helps as well. As the first episode always is there was a ton of set up and not much pay off in Freakshow's opener but I do hope it improves as the season progresses because this wasn't the best start at least in this Scribblers' humble opinion.
So what did you think Scribbler fans? Did you like the Freakshow opener better than I did? Feind would give it about a 5/10 rating so hopefully it picks up.
