Welcome Scribbler Metalheads and music lovers! The first set of 5 are out of the way and now it’s onto the Top 10. This is the meat & potatoes of my listening pleasure. There’s plenty of diversity in here and it’s doubtful anyone else’s Top 10 of 2014 looks anything like it. With a couple of exceptions due to being newer releases these are most listened to albums of the year. So on with it... here is my #10 thru #6 picks for the year.
I baffled everyone with bullshit in my first installment so I won’t reiterate and just get on with it. This set of five is all over the metal musical map so if anyone else’s list matches this consider yourself just as completely batshit crazy as Old Man Feind. Congratulations, find a yourself a good doctor and start taking meds ‘cause your fuckin’ crazy! So let’s dive on in…
I’ve been a huge fan of Goatwhore for several years now as they serve up their unique form of blackened thrash with a NOLA flavor but that is only part of why I fucking love this band. The real reason I love Goatwhore is that they serve up wicked intelligent blasphemy like no other metal band out there. They don’t do it by pretending to be some fake ass Satan worshippers tossing “Satan” into a song just for attention*Cough Venom Cough* instead they just cut through the religious bullshit with a butcher knife or perhaps it’s a chainsaw. I mean come on their 2009 album is titled Carving Out The Eyes Of God, blasphemy doesn’t get any better than that. Now granted Goatwhore had a fast track to my heart due to guitarist Sammy Duet who previously played with an all time Feind favorite, Acid Bath, plus vocalist Ben Falgoust who also served as vocalist for Soilent Green (technically Louis B. Falgoust II). However, if Goatwhore sucked the fact I like those guys wouldn’t save it but Goatwhore is awesome. When the very first song on the album, Poisonous Existence In Reawakening, ends with the killer verse, “Legacy of the insane forged in a god’s delusion / Spoils of this damnation that feed a sadistic mind / Enticed into deception of a false dream of desire / Nurturing of evil turned bleak in the outcome of vile achievement”, how can you not love it? Goatwhore, much like #11 Revocation, have yet to make a bad album and always seem to end up in my Top Ten every time. Constricting Rage of the Merciless doesn’t break that streak and I have no doubt their next one will end up on my year’s best as well.
Honestly I don’t know what all I can say about this one. I’ve been a Machine Head fan for nearly 20 years and before that was a fan of Robb Flynn’s first band Vio-lence. Do Machine Head break any new ground on Bloodstone & Diamonds? No, not really. Bloodstone & Diamonds is the latest progression of a band that never seems to disappoint (ok, Supercharger isn’t my favorite but still has a few redeeming moments). The Burning Red & The Blackening are still hands down my favorite MH albums and I don’t think B&D will knock either of those off my top spots but that aside Bloodstone & Diamonds is a kickass album. Sure thrash is the base of the MH sound but they’ve forged their own musical path over the course of now 20+ years with this year being the 20th Anniversary of their first full length, Bleed My Eyes. Sorry MH I only just now realized that when I looked it up, Damn I feel old now! Ok, fine I already felt old so fuck you! Anyway Bloodstone & Diamonds is heavy as hell when it needs and wants to be, kicks it old school thrash when it wants to and awesomely slows down when it wants to as Machine Head have been doing now for so long. How can I not put it in my Top Ten when I love the band and there isn’t a song on the album I don’t like? I guess that really says it all, another year, another kick ass Machine Fucking Head album!
My personal favorite
This one should be kind of a no-brainer for anyone that read my full album review of this one or any of the articles I wrote about it before its release. The only thing I really can say about this one is, UTA PLEASE COME BACK!!!! Yes, Uta Plotkin is hot but honestly I don’t care about that, I care that her voice is fucking fantastic and it’s beyond sad that she decided to leave Witch Mountain just as Mobile of Angels was released. That is really the odd thing about the whole situation as quite honestly I have never heard of a key member quitting a band just as a new album is released, especially what is perhaps their best album to date (it is for me personally). But hey, shit happens in bands so who the fuck knows? There isn’t much I haven’t said about this one already, it’s fantastic from start to finish. I am curious who the band gets to replace Plotkin and I do hope they continue to make music this damn good.
The Lucid Collective was the very first Dueling Review here on TDBS and for good reason, it’s fucking awesome! I’ve mentioned numerous times that tech-death metal is fast becoming one of my favorite genres of metal since it combines the extreme elements of metal with the technical playing ability of thrash. Since this is a newer and somewhat undefined area of metal the diversity it’s being done with is just amazing! The bands that stand out do so by adding their own flavor to the sheer technical wizardry of it all. Archspire add a little progressiveness to their form of tech-death and take a little page out of early The Faceless and Psycroptic with some sci-fi themes. WhileArchspire seem to be carving out their own niche I also hear some of the best of other sci-fi death metal dabblers, Origin or even Obscura, in their sound as well. The Lucid Collective is just an excellent album that I’ve been spinning since it came out early in the year and I haven’t gotten bored with it yet. There are parts of the album that are just amaze-balls and it still astounds me every time I listen to it which is an uncountable number at this point.
You can look all you want but good fucking luck finding an album with as much diversity as you’ll find on Melana Chasmata. Tom Gabriel Warrior really outdid himself this time and probably said it best when he said, I’m paraphrasing here as I don’t have the exact quote, “[call Triptykon’s sound whatever you want, it’s just metal}”. Melana Chasmata has everything in one nifty little package. Inside you’ll find some black metal, some death metal, some thrash, some doom and plenty of experimentation with combinations of all these and many more. The sound created is what Warrior began with the Celtic Frost reunion that fell apart quickly but the sound remains. Triptykon is dark, evil and brooding as though the weight of the world is slowly crushing you to dust but you leave feeling refreshed and renewed like your soul has just been laid bare for you to take your first steps as a new person. Of course, it’s just an album so your crap life returns whether you want it to or not but for about an hour Warrior gives you a nice little soul cleansing so when it ends… fuck it just rinse and repeat!
Well that’ll do it for this installment boys & girls. Tomorrow I’ll end with my Top 5 of 2014. Hopefully some of these are your favorites or if nothing else perhaps I’m introducing you to some awesome ones you may have missed. Hopefully my list is much different from any others you’ve seen as I don’t concentrate on just one or two genres as I see many do. I like a little of everything and hopefully that shines through in my list. Again this is the first year in a long time that there really isn’t any non-metal on my Best of the Year list, not that I haven’t heard any but none beat out anything I currently have on my list. I seem to listen to more and more all the time so I have no doubt next year will be more diverse and agonizing to put together as I know a few that are coming that I’m already excited about. Anyway tune in tomorrow for Old Man Feind’s Top 5 of 2014.
Any guesses on my Top 5? Agree / Disagree so far? Remember we all have our own taste so there are no wrong Best of the Year lists. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
