Label: Xtreem Music
Country of Origin: Sweden/England
Recommended for those that pine for the heavier end of the ‘Gothenburg’ sound. Plenty of get up and groove in this one, of the death variety of course!
*Doom, NWOBHM, Stoner, Occult Rock
Label: SoulSeller Records
Country of Origin: Italy
Miles from what I would deem my normal listening faire, not in the slightest bit aggressive, not the merest hint of growling vocals or blast beats, but strangely uber alluring, very addictive with just enough ‘fuzz’, emotion and Black Sabbath influence to garner interest from the metal purists.
Break out the denim, grow your hair long so you can braid the shit outta it and dig out the hidden stash. You’ll want to play this loud, in like-minded company and for hours on end. 5/5

Yeti on Horseback deliver a style that’s slow (excruciatingly so at times!) heavy as fuck yet is so Groovy as to make even the almighty Bruce grin. Amazingly epic (most tracks breach the ten-minute mark) the album somehow manages to stay interesting as it expertly meshes a doom style with howling vocals that even sports slithers of a progressive blackened nature.
An album that is fresh yet familiar, brutal yet beautiful, a release that deserves all the attention it so rightfully receives and then some.
Country of Origin: Australia
Starting with an epic, powerful and melodic Wrath of Fenrir track, Awaken the Frost, that boasts atmospheric black elements the collection starts out on a great footing. Other personal favorites include Skinwalker (by Evitas) utilizing excellent use of a dueling vocal attack and intriguing chants and interesting instrument choices, A Knights Regret (Tomes of Ruin) that partly sounds eerily like early Amon Amarth, Trollgasm more so for the name than the overtly folksy vibe and lastly the stunning humor and oddball breakdowns and structure within Community Dinner (Beast Impalor). Admittedly though there’s not a bad track here, depending on your tastes of course.
‘Free’ on bandcamp but please support the scene by tossing them some coin
A fantastic compilation showcasing a multitude of talent that warrants attention and a larger audience. Forget the ‘shrimp on the Barbie’ mate, these guys can rock, I had no doubt as they also make fine zombie flicks too!
*Progressive Technical Thrash
Label: Earache Records
Country of Origin: USA
Damn, damn, fuck and HOLY SHIT!
All of them in essence not coming close to the sheer shredding and intricate brilliance that tickles the listener’s ears. It took me a while but I finally came to the realization, and it fit like a snug glove one you wouldn’t want to shed (if the glove fits you must acquit!) Vektor sounds like Death in the early technical years, but wait it gets better (and this will bring ‘haters’ out of every nook and cranny) in my opinion this is better than Human, ‘Perseverance’ or even ‘Individual’ on account of it not sliding into bouts of progressive over-the-top wankery but, rather, staying this side of the fence. Sporting jaw dropping technical forays of speed and intricate, precise, passages that do nothing but entice further listenings.
If the slightest hint of a progressive nature near three thirds in isn’t satisfactory enough Collapse slaps the listener silly and sideways with enough of the aforementioned to sate them for weeks to come. The last track is testimony to the diverse and musical dexterity of the band offering female choruses more befitting Fleetwood Mac accompanied by screams, shrieks and vocal attributes more commonly found in the death and black genres. Surprisingly it all works exceedingly well indeed!
Think early Revocation, Atheist vocal antics, and the best that Death has to offer and an unmistakable homage to Canadian thrash legends Voivod wrap it up nicely and crank up the volume until your stereo complains. Terminal Redux is easily one of the best releases of 16’ thus far!
- side B (split with Enigma from Peru)

I could well imagine this cranked up to 11 in the very bowels of Hell itself. 4/5
*Melodic ‘Gothenburg’ Death
Label: Xtreem Music
Country of Origin: Sweden
This is hard not to appreciate, recommended for fans of Dismember, Entombed, Dew Scented and Master although it’s overall appeal is huge as it’s so well-crafted and freakin’ impressive.
*Stoner rock. NWOBHM, Doom
Country of Origin: Poland
Utilizing a progressive nature, doom stylings and native influences Red Scalps is quite the rarity in as they expertly and easily (it would seem) manage to execute varied elements (you might not believe would go well together) into a fluid album that is an absolute pleasure to find yourself lost in.
Psychedelic passages weave throughout the album and work excellently to whisk the listener away on a multi-faceted vehicle that pleases the ears with intricacies fashioned from diverse yet familiar influence and styles. Let us not forget native war chants and top notch production.
An excellent example of just how diverse and how much talent is to be found in the stoner rock genre.
