Since apparently I am the spoiler king I will attempt to tell you about this wonderful little indie film, that you should definitely seek out if you can find it, as spoiler free as I can. I had very low expectations since I had never heard of this one so I started this with a finger close to the stop button in case things went sour. A few minutes in I could tell I could safely move my finger away and just enjoy. Praise Satan because I’ve hit on way too many duds recently though admittedly not all by my own choice.
Later we find out that the man released from prison brutally murdered Dwight’s parents for no apparent reason other than just for kicks. Since Dwight is homeless with nothing to really live for he decides to seek revenge on the man that ruined his life. He gets his car running and heads off to meet the murderer as he’s released from prison sending a postcard to his sister to let her know his intentions before setting off. His severely beat up car makes the journey getting him there just in time to see the killer released and picked up by his family. He follows them to their first stop which is a dive bar. I should mention that Blair does an excellent acting job in this film from start to finish and it’s his performance that carries the film and made this film such an enjoyable experience.
Dwight turns out to be a pretty resourceful guy apparently learning a few things from his homeless life. He makes his way to his sister to tell her what he’s done. Their relationship is a strained one since Dwight took off after the murder of their parents leaving his sister to handle everything. Something that would make anyone bitter I imagine. He tells her what he did discovering in the process that the killer’s family did not report the murder. Dwight realizes that the family is planning their own revenge and they know who he is since he had told the younger brother before setting him free.
It’s rare to find an indie this good from start to finish and I will definitely be looking to see what the director, Jeremy Saulnier, does next. He definitely deserves some recognition for making an excellent film. There are no big flashy explosions though there is plenty of blood which should satisfy you blood & gore hungry horror fans out there. I said previously there are most definitely some things in this film that will get twisted into one of my own tales so all I can say is… crossbow!
