Welcome Scribbler B-movie lovers! Old Man Feind went looking for something out of the ordinary to watch only to find a Swedish B. You may want to check those ingredients before you try an…
It seems recently Cult and I have found several slices of horror humor of both the B and non-B variety coming from New Zealand and Australia but I can’t think of one in recent memory that has come from Sweden. If you’re looking to just chill out with your brain checked at the door for a little while then grab a tasty adult beverage or a little herbal remedy and share a laugh with some horror slapstick from Sweden. It’s funny to catch another country’s idea of Americans which is probably about as low of an opinion as my own. This B does teach us one very valuable lesson: when traveling abroad be careful of the local cuisine. So exactly what is in an American Burger?
American Burger begins with our Swedish chef making a video on how to make an American Burger though sadly it is not the Muppets’ Swedish Chef. The chef is not so good at being on camera to make his commercial and we see he has some definite anger issues. We’re also left not really knowing how to make a tasty American Burger. Cut to a bus load of American students on a foreign trip though I’m not sure if anyone knows where the hell they are going but it doesn’t really matter. Part of the humor here is the fact that the “American” students are not played by American actors so the Swedish accents are noticeable and extra hilarious by being there. The bus stops finding an American Burger lunch cart at a rest stop and get invited to take a tour of the American Burger factory to see how the tasty burgers are made. I don’t see any cows, gee, I wonder what that meat is?
The bus pulls up to the American Burger factory and all hell breaks loose pretty quickly. I think you can guess what makes the burgers “American” but how the “meat” is collected makes for a bloody, gory fun romp through the woods. All types of teenage stereotypes are put on display which you actually know in the opening credits as character names aren’t given just the particular stereotype each one is ie “The Brainy One”, “The Slut” among many others. This one wasn’t quite as funny as some other Bs in this vein but it was still pretty damn good. There really isn’t a ton of plot in this one it’s all about collecting that tasty all-American meat. One of the funnier moments comes when one young man (nerd) tries to save his life by claiming to be Canadian (ewww Canadian Burger just won’t do at all!).
American Burger doesn’t end up being a gut buster humor wise but it’s still pretty damn funny. If you have a six pack in the fridge and you’re looking for a few laughs you can do a whole lot worse than American Burger. The little butterball teacher ends up being one of the funniest characters but there is plenty of sick gory humor so if you don’t have a strong stomach you may want to skip this one. If plenty of blood and gore is your thing then you should definitely check it out (Oh and did I mention the cheerleader who keeps accidentally losing her clothes?) as there are many OTT (over the top) moments to make it worth watching. It satisfied this Scribbler so…
** But don’t eat an American Burger, it has a funny after taste!
