A short story by Cult
“What do you think he intends to do with that chainsaw?”
A lazy limb flickers in the direction of a lone figure clambering over the smoking hood of a stranded car. A dilapidated rusted iron fence surrounds the vehicle, successfully barring the car's further progress into the park.
“Do you think I should inform him that the city maintains the foliage and landscaping in this park?”
“Or perhaps I should tell him that he has the wrong tool for the job?”
The figure makes contact with scorched brown turf barely making a sound. Lowering to a crouch the form looks side to side diligently scanning the immediate area. A blurred movement, a form raising from out of the bushes to the left, startles the first for a split second. The motion is efficiently curtailed by a swift chopping swipe. Pallid chunks of flesh spray in a wide radius from the arc of the smoking tool affixed to a comically oversized fabric covered limb.
“Poor Sylvia, all she ever wanted was something to cuddle up with and gnaw on.”
“You know it's really not polite to talk with your mouth full.”
“What was that?”
In abject confusion the unorganized rabble come to a halt, jostling against each other they fumble wildly at the distraction that has unexpectedly landed in their midst. Moments later the prize is held aloft by the raggedy hand of the lucky victor. A slack yawning mouth gapes open, wide shifting eyes bounce around spastically in sockets set deep within a dry fissured mask of a face. The disembodied head is adorned by a “where the fuck am I?” look. It doesn't last long. The force of the explosion vomits shards of bone and jagged gristle in all directions. The vicious projectiles tear the close quartered group apart in an instant producing an impromptu shower of viscera and human waste. Scattered trinkets of bloody flesh tell the tale of massacre.
“Poor lady she really didn't know what was going on. One moment she was minding her own business, happily sifting through the shrubbery for something to chew on and the next her head was loped off, picked up, inserted with an incendiary device then... KABOOM!”
“Ur urrr uhhh!”
Swiftly raising from its crouch the shadowy figure again scans for any lurking danger. The unknown form visibly relaxs, its hands reaching up and back lifting a dark hood to reveal a slender face and several thick braids of hair held back in a simple leather knot.
“I'm surprised, there I was thinking that was some badass ass dude, when in fact it's a rather healthy looking lad…” A cold direct stare from the form cuts the observation off midsentence, “Ummm... uhhhh... what now? She's spied us!”
How did I miss this before?
It was certainly an unusual sight and quite unlike anything she had recently laid eyes on. With careful steps she nears a tableau about a hundred yards away from where she'd first entered the park. On closer inspection she can clearly make out a single form where before she would've sworn there had been two. Treading lightly around the form she can see why she might have mistakenly thought so. There were two heads. Strangely one of the heads seemed to be mumbling incoherent babble from its precariously jiggling jaw which hung by a single strand of muscle tissue.
Unable to take her eyes off the sight, she squirreled a hand inside her jacket's lapel. Touching a button found there she whispers a name. A second later she gets a reply. Removing her gaze from the fused form she looked toward where she assumed the rest of her company were while still for movement of any kind.
“You have to see thi…”
A glance down tells her of the unexpected sound's origin. A single arrow has found its intended target. The feasting head had consumed its last meal.
“For fuck's sake!”
“Sorry. I saw it move.”
